What is nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste?
Hydroxyapatite is the mineral your tooth enamel is mostly made of — so toothpaste containing it is essentially using the same building block your teeth are built from. The "nano" version is milled into very fine particles that can settle onto the enamel surface, helping to remineralize it and reduce sensitivity.
It first gained attention in Japan (where it's been used for decades) and is popular as a fluoride-free alternative. Research is encouraging and growing, with some studies showing remineralization comparable to fluoride — though fluoride still has a much larger, longer-term evidence base behind it.
Nano-hydroxyapatite can be a reasonable choice if you prefer to avoid fluoride, if you have sensitive teeth, or for young children who tend to swallow toothpaste. Whether it's the right fit depends on your individual decay risk — we're happy to talk through the options at your next visit.
