When should my child first see a dentist?
Canadian and pediatric dental guidelines recommend a child's first dental visit by age one — or within six months of the first tooth appearing. Early visits aren't about "treatment"; they're about prevention, catching small issues early, and helping your child feel comfortable so the dentist becomes a familiar, friendly place.
What to expect at your child's first visit
First visits are short, gentle, and parent-friendly:
- A look at your child's teeth, gums, bite, and jaw development
- A gentle cleaning and, when appropriate, fluoride to strengthen enamel
- A "tooth count" and tips made fun for little ones
- Time for your questions — teething, thumb-sucking, diet, and brushing
We move at your child's pace and explain everything in kid-friendly language, so there's nothing to fear.
Caring for your young child's teeth — tips for parents
A few habits make a lifelong difference:
- Start early. Wipe your baby's gums after feeding, and begin brushing as soon as the first tooth appears.
- Use the right amount of fluoride toothpaste. A rice-grain smear for children under 3 and a pea-sized amount from ages 3–6, with brushing supervised so it's spat out, not swallowed.
- Prevent "baby bottle tooth decay." Don't put your child to bed with a bottle of milk, formula, or juice — the sugars pool on the teeth overnight. Aim to wean from the bottle by about age 1.
- Go easy on juice and sugary snacks, and offer water between meals.
- Brush twice a day, and help them floss once teeth touch.
- Keep regular checkups — usually every six months — so we can provide preventive care like fluoride and, later, dental sealants on the adult molars.

Children's dentistry FAQs
Are baby teeth really that important? Yes — they hold space for adult teeth, help with speech and eating, and decay in baby teeth can affect the permanent teeth forming beneath them.
What if my child is anxious? That's completely normal. We take it slow, use simple language, and let your child build trust at their own pace — and starting visits early makes a big difference.
Do you offer fluoride and sealants? Yes. Both are safe, proven ways to prevent cavities, and we'll recommend them when they're right for your child.
Is thumb-sucking a problem? It's normal in young children and usually stops on its own. If it continues past the early years, we'll talk through gentle ways to help.
